we had a lethal time on our first european tour this is how it went down

+ van overheating en route to Dover causing a rush against the clock
+ we made it just in time for the ferry
+ arrived in Calais and drove to Leiden
+ got lost in Leiden and offered a place to crash from 2 local messheads
+ eventually found the venue and crashed for the night
+ Woken by hackers in the squat
+ Coffee and a walk around the market & a coffeeshop before soundcheck
+ banter with French bands I Pilot Daemon and Time to Burn
+ massive jam (Todd's singing was a highlight)
+ Drive to Antwerp with van Overheating again, getting worse!!!
+ Load in to an already busy venue to meet our awesome host Sam
+ Enjoyed Animal Version,Betunizer,Gypsy Rufino & Your Highness
+ Ate a fuckload of awesome handmade burgers
+ Stayed with Viv and Wobert the absolute legends
+ Day off so we took the van to the Gargage to get fixed
+ explored antwerp then returned to Music city where Pieter put us up for the night
+ todd painted a snib for pieters entrance
+ played a headfuck of a board game and ate lots of bread pudding
+ woke up in pitch black convinced it was like 4am turned out to be 12:30
+ Breakfast followed by a jam
+ Drive to Ghent
+ Pasta, beers and banter upstairs
+ panic about turnout at 9pm only 5 people in venue, by 9:25 it was packed :D
+ Chilled at Kinky star before heading to our host Luc's
+ We woke up to a load of breakfast waiting on the table for us including some ham/bacon stuff, we were unsure what it was so cooked it just in case :D
+ Long drive to luxembourg, nothing very exciting happened except drinking a bottle of whiskey in the back and almost running out of petrol
+ Arrived at the venue a little later than planned to meet our Lux mates Claude and Mathis
+ Venue was a tennis courts bar/restaurant, great turnout and great people, we played with Ziamese Sessions
+ walked to Germany for the craic
+ Stayed with Mathis and his Dad where they showed us the process for the handmade prints they'd done for us!!!
+ Packed our gear and set off for Lille
+ Arrived early met Alaska pipeline and Jeff
+ Quietest show of tour but still fun
+ Had dinner after the show and stayed at Jeff's
+ Lunch and a good walk around Lille
+ Last day of tour in Hazebrouck with our friends Fall Of Messiah and the excellent John Makay
+ We stayed at Pierre' Farm in their practice room/barn
+ said our goodbyes :( and set of on our 350mile drive back to Derby with a car full of stinking cheese!

Roll on April........we can't wait to get back :D

We played the mainstage at 1.30am (only 4 and a half hours later than scheduled) at the Clockworks festival on Friday night...it was awesome and alot of fun was had :D

ATC/ OBE Tour (Part One)

We’ve just finished our little run of dates with our new buddies Orders of the British Empire, the first show got off to a bit of a dodgy start with a few tech problems with bass pedals in the second song but we survived (we’re sure it’s a London thing now). We played with the awesome Suffer Like G Did and Hreda, great night despite the problems!

Derby next - we were joined by Cissy and The Dust Collectors for what turned out to be one of the most enjoyable gigs we’ve played in a while which more than made up for the previous nights issues, there was alot of drinking done as we introduced the O.B.E lads to their first bottles of buckfast as we drank into the small hours.

Sunday was all about a huge brunch before setting off to Leeds, we played with our good friends and our newest label buddies Khuda and the ever excellent Magnapinna, it was yet another fun sweaty night before we headed back to Nottingham for Work the next morning :(

Work done for the day it was time to meet up with the O.B.E lads again and load in at the Chameleon in Notts, by far the hottest day of the tour so far and not helped by an army of flying ants pestering the fuck out of us all, we were joined by sheffield boys Actionier and local buds 8mm Orchestra as well as beatboxer Lee-tabix, it was our first headline show in Nottingham and we enjoyed the shit out of it.

After the show we said our goodbyes to the O.B.E lads and went our seperate ways (until next time) to go get much needed showers!

O.B.E play in Chichester on Wednesday

Our Birmingham show at the sunflower lounge this thursday has been postponed for a bit (we’ll be playing Scruffy Murphys on the 12th August) so our next stop this week will be Ireland on Friday for a few shows with Friend? we can’t wait :D

Part 2 - IRISH SHOWS

we arrived in Dublin airport around 9pm on Friday night with no clue how we would get to Blessington Lakes for the Knockanstockan festival, we were just about to jump on the bus to Dublin for the night when we got a text telling us we had a lift waiting for us at the other side of the airport carpark so off we set in search of this mystery person and found Josh’s mate Peter waiting for us to go to the festival…LEGEND!!!

We arrived at about 11.20 and found our buddies Friend? just as ASIWYFA were starting and drove straight down to the festival site to get our wrist bands and get on the session, ASIWYFA were lethal as usual and after their set we had a quick catchup before they had to set off for Glasgowbury. We proceeded to get very messy and memories are sketchy at best.

Saturday we spent the day checking out the other bands and fighting tired heads and hangovers before we were due to play at 8.30pm, we had a blast although you could probably tell a few of us had had a heavy one the previous night but it was fun and we partied for yet another night!

Sunday we had a quick scare that i’d lost my bag with all my guitar pedals and passport in it meaning i’d have been living back in Ireland for a while (not a bad prospect really) but it later showed up it had been mixed up with Absolutely curtains gear. Panic over we headed to Mark’s flat in Dublin to get showered and ready for our show at Twisted Pepper, all the bands were on top form including Cube and Boat to Palermo who played their first and second gigs respectively :D

also playing were Overhead, the Albatross who i’d heard lots of good things but not heard anything by, but they were awesome really ballsy post-rock stuff and we’ll defintiely get them over to the UK soon. Friend? Headlined the show and as usual were outstanding then we all head off to kinsealy for a session before setting up in the kitchen at about 3.30am for a sweaty set which was a nice end to the weekend!

we jumped in a taxi about 7am and headed straight to the airport, with a severe lack of sleep and more booze than needed to be in our systems we arrived back in the UK and i got the bus straight into work…next stop Southampton to finish recording the album and then it’s on to Scotland for our first time ;D

so our little Ash got married on Friday :D

It was a great day and we all partied hard to celebrate and as a result we’re having a little rest for a few more weeks so he can enjoy married life before we hit the road with Orders of the British Empire in July, in the meantime todd will finish recording his Bass tracks for the album this weekend and then it’s on to mixing and mastering :D

Also our buddies & labelmates Kasper Rosa will be on tour with A plastic rose this week and we’ll hit it hard with them this week…

we had a blast at the Nice weather for airstrikes festival in Brighton at the weekend, we played possibly the hottest but most well organised gig ever along with Shapes, Brontide and Talons on the saturday, then stuck around on sunday to see our buddies Monsters build mean robots, Friend? and Double handsome dragons (all of who were on top form :D)

We have one more show coming up on the 8th June @ Bar One, Derby w/ Manatees,Fixit kid and Directions then we'll take a little break until july so we can finish the album and so that Ash can tie the knot on the 18th June.

Armed with a fresh setlist, featuring new material from their forthcoming debut album release, Alright the Captain seem to be filled with a renewed sense of passion and determination. The inquisitive, spacey sound they have perfected still remains, but some of the new tracks preview a more spacious, often heavier sound from the trio - which promises great things to come. it’s been a hectic week so far since last friday, i was playing guitar for Karhide in Nottingham along with ANTARES from Leeds (who were really enjoyable).

Saturday was a night off so we had a house party at mine which was either a really good or really silly idea before the all dayer on Easter sunday but we recouped and played alongside Stig Noise, Brontide, Hot head show, Stag and Crushing Blows, we got obscenely wasted with mates and don’t remember much other than dancing around like maniacs all day :D

Monday was a night off from ATC shows but bUTTONpUSHER/ One Beat was in full swing at the Chameleon as we put on Luxembourgs’ Mutiny on the bounty in Nottingham along with Shapes, Solomon Grundy and Young Wolves, excellent night, great bands and great turnout!

Tuesday we headed to Manchester to play a Dingo barracks promo night where we were joined by Pneu and Shield your eyes once again and had a great night catching up with our buddies from Khuda who were driving Hoarder Myna to the show, it was a 5 band lineup, we met some really sound people in Omnivore & Hoarder Myna and we’ll definitley be sorting some more shows together in Future, after the show we met up with the awesome Chrik and Last days of lorca who’d just finished playing in Manchester too then we stayed with my sister and stayed up talking shite into the small hours before finally crashing in possibly the most comfortable bed ever :D

Wednesday got off to a lazy start for me and Ash while Todd had to go to work, we sat around at Helens and had breakfast and watched some flashforward before setting off for Liverpool where we found the venue quite easily, it was a lovely little cafe/bar called Mello Mello and was made all the better by the fact that we were playing with Chrik for the Dance on Toast launch night. The sound wasn’t the greatest in the world for our set but there was a great vibe in the venue and we played a fun sweaty set before we started the party and i ended up pretty wasted as we headed back to Rik Chrik’s for the night!

Thursday was another lazy start to the day, we got to leeds early in the afternoon and met up with Tom khuda at the Cardigan arms and helped him clean up the building site that the venue has become while it undergoes refurb, we had a quick jam in the venue before soundchecks and then found out that tonight would be another 5 band bill, Khuda opened the night with a warmup show in preparation for their support with russian circles and were followed by noisy 3 piece Hired muscle, up next was a band we’d not heard of before called Magnapinna who were bloody great, our turn then, first song was fine but then diaster struck and my pedals all started dying and my guitar was inaudible, it took to the 3rd song before things were back on track and we pulled it back and had fun, rounding the night up were the excellent Hoarder myna before we all headed back to Steve Khuda’s for a few hours kip before we had to drive back to Notts so i could sit in the office doing sweet FA :(

Just been pointed in the direction of this Italian Blog about us from darkeyes.iobloggo.com....

Giri di basso a far da portante alla chitarra che varia dal metal al jazz passando per il rock psichedelico. La batteria lascia intendere che il gruppo abbia delle reminiscenze hard-core. Questo è quello che si può trovare sul myspace di questo nuovo gruppo inglese strumentale, che avendo perso lungo la strada un componente propone un ep dalla line-up composta da tre soli componenti.
Nei tre pezzi che compongono il myspace della band(http://www.myspace.com/alrightthecaptain) potete trovare digressioni più vicine al post-metal (nella prima traccia "Honey Badger") con incroci di noize old style. La batteria del primo pezzo è puramente giocata con il basso con manierismo Mastodon, poi trascende il tutto verso una calma più rarefatta che incrocia arpeggi jazz ed elettronica noize ad una batteria quasi assente con esplosioni e silenzi ritmati col giusto gusto.

"Neo Tokio", il secondo pezzo, è il rincorrersi di un riff giocato con cambi di batteria sottostante, una digressione a metà che sfora nell'elettronica distorta con un crescendo finale che discorre liscio liscio il suo incedere fino all'ormai classico esplodere di chitarra che ramifica la canzone verso un particolare suono, che innesta nella ormai ricetta consolidata sonic youth una pesantezza più propria del death-rock o del metal della prima ora.

Da ascoltare. Bel gruppo, bello anche l'artwork in stile sticker-art.

Tonight is the You Slut! show at the rescue rooms (we're on at 10.30pm) it's gonna be boss! I caught their set last night in Derby and the new stuff sounds brilliant :D

Ferry is booked for the early hours of monday morning so we're all set to rampage round ireland for 6 days with Chrik now....WE CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!! only 5 more hours of work for all of us captains and we're off for 9 days :D

We did a quick merch tally and quickly realised we're almost out of stock now...we only have a handful of T-shirts and 123.ep's left but we do have some copies of the split with BTPAM to bring with us, check out the first runs art work below courtesy of the lovely Ruaraidh and Nord. you can expect an alternative design for the actual launch in March tho.

We'll be doing 2 launch gigs for the split in March..

but until then we'll see ya in Ireland next week :D

Plans for 2010

Happy New year everyone!

2010 has got off to a busy start with us hiding ourselves away in our lockup 3 days a week while we put the finishing touches to the songs we've written for the album.
We'd originally planned to start recording the album this month but due to various factors we've pushed it back until the start of March now so we've got plenty of time to get them all perfect :-)

we are however recording two tracks at Dub:rek studios with Jay over the last weekend of January for a split EP we're doing with Beyond this point are monsters, we're hoping to have it ready before we head to Ireland for our tour with Chrik, those dates again are...

15th - Secret show, Northern Ireland
16th - Auntie Annies, Belfast
17th - Masons, Derry
18th - Baker Place, Limerick
19th - The Quad, Cork
20th - Twisted Pepper, Dublin

We're still booking shows for our first European tour with Kasper Rosa in July/August if anyone can help us out at all, we'll love ya forever :-)

YEEEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!! It's almost Christmas and we're in hibernation for another week before we start recording our first album so it's time to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who supported us in any way this year.

We've had an absolute blast playing around 90 shows all over the UK and Ireland, highlights have included supports with Mono, ZU, Kong, Adebisi shank and Chickenhawk, Our tours with Monsters build mean robots, Double handsome dragons, Kasper rosa and This is our monument (So many good times), Filming for the I'm NOTT from London movie, The Hockley Hustle, Being introduced by the BBC, Joining the Field records family, the 123.EP going to Japan and finally partying with all the awesome people we've met on our travels :-)

Special thanks to Ross Hunter for his continuous help, Tim Waterfield for all his time and support and of course recording the 123.EP, Osamu @ Linus records in Japan, Ali from BTPAM, Jay, Jim & Callum @ Dub:rek, Dean Jackson @ BBC Nottingham, Will Robinson, Leftlion, all the promoters who put us on, Will Hapgood, Dan Robertson and Dan Barrett...anyone else we've not mentioned you know who you are...you all mean alot to the three of us...mwwaaaaahhhhhh xxx

"Alright the Captain? are from all over, right? They're from Birmingham, Northern Ireland, Norwich, Leicester and Notts. Either this means that the composite members all live / have lived in lots of different locations (apparently there are only three of them) or they're HUGE! Reigning down their perilous tyranny from the skies, destroying Britain one step at a time. Personally, I hope it's the latter.
This three are evidently very talented musicians whose prowess is noticable from the first hammered on riff from Marty's guitar to the second slapped funk moment from Todd's bass. The music's all instrumental with time signatures designed to make dancing difficult unless you already know the song really well. That is, there's a big jazziness to the sound and you get the feeling the three of them are writing the exact music they want to create. There's a lot of variation in their sound also, just when you think you can hear some bastardised combination of Primus, Battles and Mogwai, it explodes into a Tool, Mars Volta, Squarepusher moment which changes again before you even had the chance to acclimbatise. For instrumental rock, there's a sense of impatience in the song that sees them moving into completely different sonic environments within a little space of time and before you know it, the song's over in just under four minutes.

In that sense, it's very difficult to really place direct comparisons with these guys but just to go with the flow of their impatient sound. They put it well themselves when they say "from the distorted synth bass to the angular dissonance of the rhythm guitar through to the ambient delayed lead guitar textures and the solid drum tracks kicking against the glitchy electronic loops and trippy samples, Alright the Captain? have a unique musical character and an open minded approach to their genre bending anti-rock".

Over prolonged periods of time this may make your head explode, but you can picture it going down a storm in a live environment.

If you like your post rock but find many miss the point with their one-trick-pony 4/4 cinematic sound tracks for imaginary films when there's a whole world of possibility to be explored" - GOD IS IN THE TV ZINE

ATC in Japan.....kinda!

We received a lovely email yesterday from a guy called Osamu in Tokyo, it turns out he wants to stock the 123.EP through Linus records...
we're all obviously chuffed that anyone in Japan had even heard of us let alone taken the time to contact us about putting out our little DIY EP :-)

Saturday we played our last show of the year in EYE and it was fuckin awesome, it was so much fun and a great way to end a busy gigging schedule so big thanks to Jane, Sophie, Lee and everyone else involved in organising the party :-)
Since then we've locked ourselves up in our new lockup while we crack on with getting the album and split 7" done for release in 2010, we have 2 more new songs (working title for one of which is called Peanut worm) in progress and a few more ideas floating around to be worked on too :-)

time for a coffee tho now!

right so we've been slacking on the blog recently but thats about it really...we've been busy badgers writing and tweeking tracks for the album which we'll be starting work on over winter and hopefully releasing late spring (fingers crossed) we've also been playing some fun shows including our first trip back to London in over a year,we played the old blue last with Shield your eyes ,Nitkowski and In case of moon disaster and caught up with friends we'd not seen in ages, even the long drive home was fun as we blasted out all the nu-metal classics :-)

Tonight we play our last Nottingham show of the year @ SEVEN with worrieaboutsatan, Last days of lorca and Lost from Atlas so thats gonna be party central i reckon.

The partying continues right over the next few days too as Ash's night Creative blocks is tomoro and features UPCDOWNC, Last days of Lorca and Nova robotics @ Big Blue in Derby. Then on ASaturday we play our final show of 09 in EYE, it's a fancy dress party and the theme is Granny & Grandads so expect to see some ridiculous photos of what we might look like 60 years from now :-)

This is Captain Rosa Tour

so we finished our 5 day stint with our friends This is our monument and Kasper rosa last night and had an absolute blast, there was so much mayhem and banter along the way it would just take too long to write about it all (there'll be lots of video footage doing the rounds soon) but

* there was alot of partying in peterborough,
* banana curry (wtf?) and a beautiful massive house to stay in in chichester,
* biffy clyro stealing the show in nottingham,
* drunken debauchery and taking over derby into the early hours
* and alot of hangovers in leeds which got blown away by khuda.

We'll be seeing our new friends again in feb for Ryan Kasper rosa's 21st and copius amounts of bucky:-)

Manchester was fun despite the headliners pulling out while we were en route to the venue so we arrived to find that there was a borrowed kick pedal for the drum kit which got taken back 2 songs into our set :-( after a few minutes standing around we decided to try a few more songs with Ash physically kicking the bass drum, we battled on and enjoyed ourselves as much as possible....we learned a valuable lesson, don't leave anything to chance and bring everything!

Nottingham was another fun show with Sincabeza & Souvaris, it was absolutely rammed at various points during the night and our nightmare came during our penultimate song when Todds bass slowly started cutting out meaning we had to drop one of our new fave songs called "The Payoff" and resolve ourselves to party mode for the remainder of the night!

our next show is the Hockly hustle...we'll make sure everything's working and that nothing in our control goes wrong but it's us so somethings likely to happen!

"Alright the Captain are an awesome local instruMENTAL band who created alot of noise for three guys. I've heard them described as aggresive experimental rock, metal, prog rock, deranged art surf ... what comes to my mind when i hear them though is really tight math/metal like 65daysofstatic playing metallica with some cool spacey noises to boot. Loud, experimental and bloody good to watch. Their set was full of energy and really captivating, using the bass to create moments of surf style distortion and a mathy guitar line over some mental rythms. Surprising that such a small local band can be so good."

last night was alot of fun at the mist despite the rain obviously putting some people off coming along, Grande duke kicked the night off with a really awesome set despite a runaway drumkit obviously annoying Baz, Double handsome dragons played alot of new material from their new cd "Lions, Tigers and Holy shit what was that?" which they had for sale in lovingly handmade monster face cases and i'll be sticking it on later :-)
We played 3 new tracks called Guilt, Neo-Tokyo and Honey Badger which we managed to get through without any fuckups and had a blast after not playing for a little while.

by the time Adebisi shank took to the stage we were cuttin it close to curfew so i had a quick word with the Mist's owner Tony and he let us extend the curfew a bit so they could play their set which was fuckin awesome. Lar, Vin and Mick are an energetic bunch bouncing around like maniacs, manipulating pedals like loons on speed and melting the faces off everyone in attendance as they rushed through a 6 song set of brilliance...looking forward to catching the lads again sometime soon for sure!

Checked my emails this morning to read that our show at The Bodega Social has been cancelled cos we're too "heavy" to support You animals :-(

First two practices in the new lock-up have been pretty productive but if you read the structure Martin and I wrote down and taped to the drum kit, you wouldnt make much sense of it. The new song goes twid doot twice...then twit x4, repeats and then goes into the doot build up bit.

Todd's gotta decifer the Captain code on saturday night when he joins us, and write an end section.

We've pretty much got four new tunes in the pipe line now

whats going on?

Last night we went to see Brontide + These Waves + Old Gold + Little Courage = awesome night followed by Generation Kill til the early hours :-)

This sunday we're doing an interview and recording a track live for a documentary movie called I'm NOTT from London which will feature awesome bands from the midlands like Pilgrim fathers, Amusement parks, Beyond this point are monsters, Love ends disaster and shitloads more, we're being filmed at the Arts organisation in Nottingham on Sunday @ 11am it's FREE so come along if ya fancy it!

After that we're taking June off to write and rehearse like we've never rehearsed before with the exception of one show on the 15th with Adebisi shank.

We move in to our new Captain HeadQuarters on June 1st with 24/7 access so are gonna take advantage of that by pretty much living in the lockup so we can get ready to tour our asses off in summer, we're currently booking shows all over England and Ireland again at the moment and theres a chance we may be going to Italy over summer to play some shows with Stoned dog standing but nothings 100% confirmed in regards that so watch this space.

We're aiming to have a release we're 100% happy with before autumn (fingers crossed)

Todd's currently off galavanting round the country doing art workshops while Ash and I are busy promoting bUTTONpUSHER & Creative Blocks respectively. Blocks is on this Friday at Big blue in Derby with a varied lineup for ya or if anyones near Leicester white noise summer starts at firebug on friday evening for the weekend!

The launch night featuring Blakfish, Hot bone and Rolo tomassi DJ's kicked off to a pretty decent start, we did have our first cancellation a few days before the event with Brontide having to reschedule for later in the year but we brought in the lovely "These Waves" to fill in for them and all the bands played excellent sets, Hot bone were my favorites of the night fo sure although it was a tight call as blakfish were fuckin excellent as usual. The smoking ban has killed clubnights tho cos after Blakfish's set everyone decided to head out or go home leaving James Tomassi DJing to pretty much an empty dancefloor while everyone gathered round the tables outside for a drum off with some guy who'd toured with Jojo Mayer.

Back in work again for another few days now after a hectic few days

on thursday a few of us caught Foals at the Rockhouse in Derby which was fun, couldn't understand a single word Yannis was saying between songs tho and the vocals in general were a bit quiet but it was a fun show.

Friday we played the Leftlion show at Brownes in Hockley with Polymath who were all lovely, both bands found out very quickly that we were playing to the wrong crowd altogether, it was full of shirt and shoe wearing clowns lookin for a trendy bar and the stiff kitten DJ's didn't really help matters by playing lots of banging house music,leading people into a false sense of security for their friday night. We played a pretty enjoyable set and had fun just a shame the only people who gave a shit were the people we knew!

Saturday a much needed lie in then just killed time until i headed over to Notts to see the ASIWYFA and Maybeshewill guys at Rock city. Bangin shows from both as usual!

Sunday was the Frigid stars all dayer at the vines in Derby.

I pretty much caught everything that was going on and ate lots of delicious cake, the highlights were xtag's set including ATDi and Fugazi covers, Two minute noodles were fuckin awesome again, who knew organ and drums could be so much fun? check them out!!!
We played a fun but sketchy set so we're looking forward to recouping in June and getting back to form for summer!
Grande Duke are Baz from Beyond this point are monsters new band, they reminded me a bit of isis in parts but it was Baz's drummin which really stood out with some great off time beats!
Maybeshewill and ASIWYFA co-headlined and again were fuckin banging, the sound was perfect and you could hear everything crystal clear, the only disappointment was ASWIYFA's set being cut short due to curfew :-(

This week we've got the bUTTONpUSHER launch night and the next captain show is saturday for the Fusefest in Derby alongside bands like Asian Dub foundation, These waves and loads more and it's all FREE!!!,we play The Mist in the afternoon sometime i think!

Fucking deadly weekend, arrived after the 4 hour journey (thanks to Paul the legend for driving) and got checked in and off we went to find our chalet and meet the neighbours who were a crowd from Dublin, turned out they were all in awesome bands called Adebisi shank, Hands up who wants to die and Hooray for humans.
On friday we caught Devo, Jesu and fuck buttons, i really can't remember much after fuck buttons at all :-(

Saturday we went for a walk along the beach and stopped for breakfast by the sea to clear our delicate heads before catching Lords last show for a long time which was cool but no where near loud enough which was a shame but still a wicked show.
I caught Retribution gospel choir (Alan Sparhawk of Low's new band), the fucking mighty Qui (one of my personal highlights along with the jesus lizard)they were so fucking dark and rocked so hard, David Yow's a legend and they completely owned the afternoon, a few people had recommended Harvey Milk so off we trekked and we definitely weren't disappointed, back to the chalet for some redwine and buckfast action (yes they sold buckie at butlins.kinda sums up the mental people they like to encourage at butlins :-) in preparation for the first jesus lizard show in 11 years, we headed up with the neighbours and got a wicked spot about 4 rows from the front, they opened with Puss and it was only about a minute before Yow had his Tshirt ripped off and began corwd surfing, the whole show was carnage, i struggled to stay on my feet and got the absolute shit beat out of me including Yow's knee to the head, i lost a shoe but got it back luckily or i'd have been shoeless for the rest of the weekend. After the set i lost everyone so i had a little space around before Sleep, they were one of the heaviest bands i've ever seen live and they destroyed the place, admittedly i was pretty wankered by the time i ran into Shea and Rony and the rest of the Belfast crowd, we went and partied at their chalet after until security shut us down and i headed back towards our chalets but i got lost on my way before running into Barry (hands up), apparently we headed round a few bars handing out stickers and badges before heading to the Dubliners chalet for more carnage eventually crawling into bed at about 7am.

Sunday i woke up gutted that the weekend was fast approaching an end and nursing a brutal hangover, we didn't move out of the sun until about 5.30 to go see future of the left on fine form playing the main stage, time then for a quick bite to eat while we watched a bit of parts and labour, i like their recorded output but was not a fine of their live show so we left and continued to aprty back at the chalets, we'd the most mental mini party ever crowdsurfing round the chalet to weezer and um bongo before heading into the arena again for the mae shi who were excellent (i'd not heard much of their stuff before either but will be back for more)
A few of us headed to see the jesus lizard again and it was another epicly vicious show although the band and crowd were all a little tamer than the previous night i thought.

I caught the last few songs of This will destroy you's set which was brutally loud but beautiful. Then it was off to see sleep again as they were playing most of dopesmoker, i left for a little bit and went to the chalet for 15 mins respite before heading back in again with barry and heading down the front, we left after wards and had a bop round crazy horse to mike divers set before they closed the bar and we went in search of a party, we met the guys from Health and Parts and labour and chatted for a while on the hunt together unsuccessfully before they gave up and went to their chalets, we continued the hunt and ran into a load of welsh guys one of whom looked like Bubs from the Wire and bantered with them for a bit, we'd somehow ended up at the opposite end of butlins and had to make the trek back to our chalets to find the party which was kicking off behind our chalet...slinked off to bed at about 6 and was up again for 10 to check out!

Monday we said our goodbyes to our wonderful new friends before a leisurely drive/sleep back and stopped off for lunch before getting home!

This week sees more rehearsals for our Leftlion show on friday and our ASIWYFA/ Maybeshewill gig on sunday. Fun times!

UPDATE: We went on first there were about 25/30 people there, no real disasters occured apart from Ash knocking the plug for my amp out of the wall mid song, bit nervous but it could have gone alot worse, it was like someone had pressed the reset button and we were 2 years back in time playing our first gig but it was fun!

I wish i knew were all really sound and we ended up chatting late into the night which was fun before crashing for ATP

Alright The Captain are an instrumental band. And round here, you know what being an instrumental band means - intricate intertwining math-y guitar lines, punishing drumming, the odd lapse into sludge metal riffage. Well... yes, all that, but there's something in the way they do it which includes more than just knowing their way round post-rock dynamics, with knowledge of surf, post-hardcore and glitch all coming to the fore. With And So I Watch You From Afar making waves with the right people, a new album from Maybeshewill, just across the county border from the trio's Derby base, in June and 65daysofstatic making a renewed attack on the senses across the festivals with an album imminent maybe there's even a scene in it all.

Friday i made the trip to Leicester to see 65 days of static, amusement parks on fire and maybeshewill at the musician, almost 2 weeks off the booze almost down the shitter, i arrived in leicester met ali and we headed towards the venue, found maybeshewill sitting in their van so we joined them for red wine and spliffs while we waited for the doors to open, down the front row for MSW and their set was awesome, the venue was tiny and absolutley rammed, there were moshpits and people just generally going nuts as MSW played tracks from the forthcoming album "sing the word hope in four part harmony" along with a nice mix of older songs too.
I only caught a bit of amusement parks set as i got sidetracked chatting to paige, neil "the fiend" minnaars,ali and a few of the guys from 65 outside, but it sounded great!

Time for 65 days then, the place was packed so seeing much was a problem but it doesnt matter with a band like 65 days, this was a really small show for 65 and they blew the place apart, they are definitley starting to sound alot more dancey now even sounding at times like the prodigy (funny that, as their soundmans the prodigys soundman) i was pretty mashed by the time they finished so my memory is a bit sketchy before heading off for my train back to derby for a house party.

party was a bit random and was full of messheads.

last thing i remember is sitting back at mine at 6am with Belfast's CUTAWAYS.

Saturday we went to a thai restauraunt for a fry up....Random!
Due to missing Cutaways set on friday night at big blue i asked them if they fancied joining us at the pirate party we were playing that night after their Rotherham gig,they agreed and we got them on the lineup quite easily, then we went our seperate ways to peterborough and rotherham with the plan of meeting later.

Peterborough was awesome, Ash and I arrived and we were well out pirated by the peterborough pirates so we had to try and make ourselves more pirate like to fit in.
The house had been so well decorated and alot of planning had gone into the party for Jane and Lee's birthdays. The lineup was Double handsome dragons, The hendo sans project and us! by the time we played we were all pretty wankered and played possibly our worst gig ever, afterwards we continued to get messy. 2am and Cutaways showed up ready to play and they were wicked playing their own brand of synth driven indie pop although half way through their set Will told us he was leaving the band cos he wasn't happy anymore so now we're a 3 piece with Ash drumming and me taking on the bulk of the guitars, it's gonna be different but we ain't giving up as long as the original 3 Captains are together :-)

as far as i'm concerned sunday and monday don't exist in my brain, i was absoultley mangled and passed out eventually on sunday night at 7pm for 15 hours straight.

back in work today cos i was not fit at all yesterday :-(

We've got a bit of practice to squeeze in now before our next gig with Hollands I wish i knew on the 7th May @ the Sal!

ZU baby yeah!!!!!!!!

Last night was amazing, I arrived at the venue pretty early after finishing work and nothing was going on despite being told it was a 4pm load in so off i went for a bit before our soundcheck, Zu were just finishing up their soundcheck as we all got back and they sounded BOSS!!!!!!

There should have been 4 bands playing but The Toucan party pulled out last minute leaving us to go on first again :-( not so bad this time round tho as there was a nice crowd in by the time we played and we got a warm reception (the semi circle of doom is starting to piss me off at English gigs tho) we battered through our set and it seemed to go down pretty well considering we were tonights pop act in comparison to the other bands :-)

we met some lovely people after our set and then the Exploits of Elaine came on playing an improvised noise set incorporating violin and layer upon layer of delay and effects from the guitars mixed with some mike pattonesque vocal gibberish culminating with the vocalist winding up a gramaphone and sticking his head in the speaker whilst purring and howling! Confusing, Yes! but experimental as fuck and bizarrely enjoyable!

Time to get a good spot for ZU and we weren't disappointed as a wall of noise came across the PA and we waited for the trio to take to the stage, they blasted into their first song and it was akin to being hit full on by a speeding monster truck only to get back up and be hit again, i don't think i'd prepared myself for quite how good they were gonna be, i pretty much spent the whole gig fixated on drummer Jacopo Battaglia, he was SICK!!!!
I couldn't even tell you how long they played for, i lost all track of time just being consumed by their powerful math rock/metal/jazz stylings and it was so refreshing to see a band pushing boundaries with Luca Mai' saxophone, Massimo Pupillo oscillating bass and a shithot drummer! I can't even attempt to review themy properly, all i'll say is GO AND SEE THEM, they'll blow you away! The only thing that would have made the night even better would have been if Mike Patton had been there too!!!!!!!

In summary last night was LOUD!!!!

We arrived at the venue to be told that we'd been switched to first on cos BTPAM had called up saying they were gonna be late :-( so we headed back to mine to chill for a bit!
We headed back to the Royal set up and played a short but sweet set to a decent turnout (it would have been alot better crowd if we'd played second)

BTPAM showed up and rocked it as usual!

Jeniferever were deadly, they took to the stage, timid and looking a bit like a rabbits in the headlights but once they began the sheer power and beauty of their music spoke volumes, there wasn't much crowd banter aside from a few whispered thank you's, the set appeared to have been cut short by the venue and the band looked a bit disgruntled as they explained to the crowd that this would be their last song, leaving me wanting more of their ethereal soundscapes!

Amusement parks are currently on tour with 65 days of static from today but last night saw them headline the Royal, and they put on one hell of a show playing tracks from APOF and Out of the Angeles like Venus in cancer, Wiper, A star is born and Blackout, they also treated us to a brand new song from the upcoming Young Fight EP called Raphaels Dark Night which was great and is a bit of a departure from the rest of their back catalogue, apart from some technical problems with pedals halfway through the set they played an absolute blinder and their lighting worked really well with their set, drawing you into a sea of noise before they finished their set leaving you drowning in feedback as they disappeared!

Tonight we support ZU @ SEVEN :-)

A weekend of firsts

Another eventful weekend's gone by catching a string of bands i've not seen before

Friday: Ash and I went to the Royal to check out SEXY NO PROMO's night featuring FUNfun, Great eskimo hoax and Wintermute, i missed FUNfun (made up from members of younogodie and plans and apologies) due to the Royal and their silly clubnight curfews forcing the show to start just after 7.30......GAY!

Got in just in time for Great Eskimo hoax and was really impressed with their dancey brand of math indie pop, reminiscent at times of foals and minnaars (not surprising when you consider they recorded with the former) with hints of European influences in some of the tracks...great show and the drums on the last track in particular really stuck in my mind!

Headlining were Leed's Wintermute, i'd not really heard much of their stuff before but knew the name as they're releasing their album on big scary monsters this week (27th to be precise) They were excellent playing progressive and energetic tunes that fit perfectly in with the Big scary monsters family, if i'd had some cash i would have went home with the album in my pocket but instead i'll have to order it next week now :-(

Saturday: I woke up at 3pm ........yes 3pm (disgraceful behaviour but prague had caught up with me) straight over to Nottingham to help out the I'm not from london lads at the Chameleon for the Great eskimo hoax gig (i arrived to find out that they'd pulled out cos of payment issues) the line up instead was The Toucan party, Best endings and ...And stars collide

The toucan party were on first, born from the ashes of Ann Arbor, the bass and drum duo introduced themselves and explained that this was their 4th gig and they were looking for a vocalist to add to the mix, they then proceeded to rupture the steadily growing crowd's eardrums with some all out gooving brutality!

Next up were upcoming Derby band Best Endings who were ace mixing elements of postrock with oldschool (good) emo, the chameleon was filling up really nicely by this stage and everybody was diggin the tunes.

Headliners tonight were Nottinghams ...And stars collide,i'd heard of these guys before on the silent ballet and enjoyed their short but sweet set, they draw influence from great postrock daddies like Explosions in the sky and UpcDownc, i had to leave halfway through their last song to get back to derby for a house party which was fun despite being off the wagon for a while now!

We had a Captain outing last night minus Todd to see Trail of dead at the Rescue rooms.
Pretty baked we arrived and assumed that middle class rut were already playing, it sounded a bit gash from outside so we stayed outside then found out it wasn't Middle class rut at all, i can't remember what they were called tho.

Anyways Sacramento's Middle class Rut came on second and after being underwhelmed by what i'd heard on myspace was quite quickly converted as is usually the case when a band makes a good impression on me live! The two piece created a mighty noisy raw groove between them ripping my ears to shreds so i'll be checking them out again soon no doubt.

Tonight however was all about the headliners, the venue was packed with people waiting for trail of dead and we somehow managed to make our way up to the front right of the stage and began the wait while TOD prepared to destroy us all, it had been 10 years since i'd last seen them so tonight was like being a young pup again :-)
After half an hour Conrad and co finally take to the stage and everyones attentions focused on the stage as they pummelled through an epic set for the next hour and a half with a nice mix of both new and old songs like Another morning stoner, Totally Natural, Relative ways and Homage.
Two songs in and my only complaint was the vocals not being loud enough, i wasn't on my own, after the song the majority of the crowd began shouting for the vocals to be turned up but apparently this fell on deaf ears and there didn't seem to be much of a difference in the levels.
Swapping between vocals, guitars and percussion the band constantly keep you on your toes as they clambered in and out of the crowd all sweating buckets and loving every track, i've been spurred on to pull my finger out of my hole and get the new album cos the tracks from it were wicked, would have been nice to have heard them before the show.

FUCKIN AWESOME BAND and every bit as good as the last time i saw them if not better!

Some minor niggles tho, Conrads guitar tech was possibly the most eager numpty ever! That grumpy security man at the front needed a smack as well.........change your fucking face mate!

so i was having a quick bUTTONpUSHER meeting after work yesterday so we could sort our wish list for bands we'd like to play for us over the next few months and it's looking pretty tasty, anyways to the point, as we were chatting the Captain were offered the support for the ZU show next week.....we're a bit excited to say the least :-)

ZU, with their original line-up of drums,bass and saxophone, the trio from Rome Italy gradually developed into their current form of highly intricate, experimental , metal/math/no-wave/free/noise/punk/jazz inspired work, breaking from the narrow confines of given music genres, and incorporating a wide array of influences into a unique sound.

Driven by a “Black Flag” work ethic, Zu have played the astounding number of over 1000 gigs all over Europe, America, Canada , Asia, Russia, and even Africa, and have released 14 albums on such labels as Ipecac, Atavistic, Frenetic, Red Note, Public Guilt, Headz (Japan),etc.

Zu have always been curious and open to collaborations with a vast number of great musicians as: Mike Patton, The Melvins, Dalek, The Ex, Peter Brötzmann, Hamid Drake, Ken Vandermark, Alvin Curran, Nobukazu Takemura, Damo Suzuki, Eugene Chadbourne, Mats Gustafsson, Han Bennink,Paal Nilssen-Love, Fred Lonberg- Holm, Joe Lally ( Fugazi ), Altered States , Amy Denio, Steve MacKay ( The Stooges! ), etc.

It's gonna be a good one methinks :-)

lil update for ya

Peterborough last week was so much fun, we partied hard and met alot of cool new people, and got invited back to play a pirate party on the 25th April :-)

After ptown it was off to Prague for my mate Will's birthday which was awesome, we stayed in Old town, drank cheap beers, chuffed ace green, went bobsleighing, saw some local bands (i kid ya not...imodium followed by the pooh ), met some more cool people and generally wrecked ourselves.
Back in the UK after 5 days and straight out again to see the Prodigy, i was very close to not going but was well glad i did as the gig was phenomenal, probably the best i've seen them yet!

Next show is the Amusement parks on fire, Jeniferever and Beyond this point... show at the Royal, Derby on the 20th April
